After a long winter, seeing people out and about again enjoying New York is refreshing, and that’s exactly what April has brought us! Temps in the high 60s and bright sunny days mean New Yorkers are finally ditching their winter puffers for more stylish ensembles and loads of great bags!
We sent Vlad out and about on bag patrol in the Upper East Side last week, and truly, the bag sightings were endless! As to be expected when on the UES, a variety of great Hermès bags passed by, from Birkins and Kellys to the Evelyne, which seems to be the most beloved daily hauler of the lunch crowd.
Chanel and Louis Vuitton remain uptown favorites, and after a dark winter, it’s a beautiful sight to see Chanel in blush pink and light beige. Check it all out below, and Handle tuned for more!
The bags are all great. And shout out to the dogs in the picture with the Rockstud.
They were a pair of giant poodles. Don’t see those around the streets of New York that often!
When I grow up I want to be like that lady rocking the orange Evelyn! #goals
These are great! Does Vlad have to ask people’s permission to take their photo? I’ve always gry…
I do not have explicit permission by the individual, but there are several reasons why I am not opposed to photographing individuals in the street and publishing their photos. Let me elaborate!
First of all, it’s a perfectly legal thing to do. In the places where we shoot our BITW features, it’s legal to photograph persons in a public space. I am also not hiding the fact that I am taking the person’s photo, which is self-evident in some of the pictures I’ve taken and published. I am not making the arrogant mistake of comparing myself to the all-time greats, but street photographers have been documenting the human condition in streets for decades, it’s an entire genre of photography that is quite popular and draws you in. I just happen to focus on individuals with interesting bags, because it’s relevant to our audience. It’s a bit of a fan-favorite feature on PB.
Lastly, the anonymity of the individual is still retained. If someone would (and has!) reached out to have their image (or IG Reel) removed after recognizing themselves, we take it down.
It’s a process I enjoy, scouring the streets in the pursuit of a decent photograph, and human beings happen to be my favorite subject. I get to do it as part of my job, which I am grateful for, and I seek out the opportunities whenever my travels allow for it. Hope that makes sense.
Thanks Vlad! That’s really interesting. I love these pieces and your photography is terrific 😊
Thank you for the kind words!
Navy Blue 2.55 Reissue Quilted Calfskin Leather 226 Flap Bag 😀
The US doesn’t have GDPR-like regulations so people can usually just take pictures of you when you’re out in a public space even without your consent. It also depends on state but these pictures are taken in New York where it’s legal to do it.
Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Many people are not comfortable at all with having their faces published.
I always wonder the same thing. Because it doesn’t look like theses people know their pic are being taken
This is exactly why I hate the Chanel flap and the Birkin. They’re so mainstream now it’s embarrassing. If I see an individual wearing them I automatically assume they have no personal sense of style.
…or possibly because you cannot afford?
I actually agree! It’s like “I have no confidence in my style so I got the safest madeline bag I could.” But, this seems to be something that is more common now than years ago as the Hermes bags are so saturated and it looks like everyone on Instagram is getting one….
Well that’s a bit of an overreaction. I think even popular (or some might say, classic) bags can be chic and styled well.
I love the Lady in light brown robe and Brown birkin. You can see she uses the Birkin as a BAG.
The Celine 16 looks a little too big and/or heavy to be wearing cross-body. Hope it isn’t fully loaded with laptop etc.
UA Guardian 2.0 Backpack.
I am interested in the bag the lady stands next to the Brandon Blackwood Shinzo Bag. I wonder what it is?
It’s one of Fendi’s pasta bags (I don’t know if there was another name for them)! There were a few styles — I catch them every now and then on the secondhand sites and I keep meaning to snag one in good condition, but they go fast. They had gold-tone pasta hardware integrated into the straps, like some fusilli, elbows, penne. You can see the fusilli on her strap. I think most were black, but I want to say maybe there were maroon ones too? I think they are adorable and so unique!
I don’t know the name of the exact bag, but it’s a vintage Fendi! I have a similar one.
ganni square shape tote bag item!
I love the navy dress with the LV Ellipse bag. That is such a cool look!
Egg-shaped mini bag!!!
I really love these kinds of posts – so glad there’s no legal impediment to taking those photos. Keep ’em coming please!
